2. Don't play music any other way except playing by heart

How ancient songs revive

Small post about making arrangements of traditional songs by Noid - how it started and has been developing.

It was long time ago, 1999 or somelike. I was studying in Petrozavodsk State University, Baltic-Finnish philology and culture faculty, Veps and Finnish languages and literature department. I was in the second year of studying, if I remember right.

One day I decided to try writing a short poem in Veps:

Hei, ei, kotkaine
Lendad sinä taivhadme.
En voi olda ilman händast
Mitte elo om minule.

Lenda randale,

Sanu armhale
Kuti tullei pilvid läbi
Minun joudai kotkaine.

Sanub kotkaine:
Tulin sulale.
Pahad vestid toin sinei,
Mäni armaz mehele.

Joudai kotkaine,
čoma suugaine.
Jäl’ges südäimes
Linneb kandatez.

Funnny thing, I couldn't make a sensible rhyme to the last stanza and I didn't want to think much about it and just made a rhyme with the first words which came to my mind: Jäl’ges südäimes linneb kandatez (it can be translated as: "after that it'll be sourcream in your heart"). Ok, let's suppose lyrics were done. It took 10 minutes to take a guitar and play some chords, some time to make an arragement on my Ensoniq TS-10 synth, record it and add vocal in Adobe Audition - and the song was ready.

In 2010, when we recorded "Kukirikku" CD, the song gained new "breath" in new arrangement, but lyrics and harmony remained all the same:



Some years passed since that and in 2007 appeared "Noid". I'd got some music material - traditional Veps songs - and we should try to arrange it. We were standing at the edge of the most exciting process and it was about to begin!:)
First of all I set an important criteria for my experiments with traditional musical material: traditional elements (melody mostly as Vepses performed their songs a capella) must remain unchanged in the final arrangements.
For the first song we took traditional Veps lullaby.

I should mention, that we tried to arrange every song in a different style.
And so on:





We're very happy to have an opportunity to acquaint you with Veps culture.
This year we'll finish our second album. New album, new sound.
So, the experiments continue.

Google Chrome now supports MIDI

Good news: Google integrated Web Audio API to it's browser.
It means that now you can use your MIDI devices to control virtual instruments without installing VSTi. Hope, that developers will actively use Web Audio API to create new virtual instruments.

Your Chrome should be updated to version 43 (Chrome beta).

Devices we use in our live performance

In this post I'll show you what musical stuff we use in our performance.
I must say the set is changing - we buy new devices and add them to the set or replace the others.

Bassist
Classical 4-string bass guitar

Boss bass overdrive - bass distortion

TC Electronic Flashback - guitar delay

Bass remains quite classical, but in some songs these devices make an interesting effect.


Drummer
Classical drum set

Electron Octatrack -  8 track performance sampler. It's hard to list all features this device provides - recorder, sequencer, looper etc. Very cool must-have device.

Dave Smith Instruments Tetra - 4-voice analog synthesizer. Very rich sounds perfectly fit to the arrangements, especially combined with Octatrack.

Keyboardist
Korg microSTATION - compact workstation. I really love this little beast!

Miditech i2-Control 37 black edition - simple midi keyboard, plugged to Microstation via midi.

Singer
Shure SM58 vocal mic

TC Helicon Voicelive Touch - vocal effects processor. This interesting device "colors" a voice and touch interface allows to easily use effects during live performances. Also it can create loops, can be controlled by midi and actually provides a singer with a mass of possibilities. It's connected with Microstation via midi to synchronize tempo and harmonizer.

New album

We're eager to share our impressions with you: we've recorded our first valuable album! 

It's called "Kukirikku" ("Upside down").

The album was recorded in sound recording studio "Myllärit" (Petrozavodsk) and contains six already known songs and two new.

We'd like to kindly thank: Natalia Antonova (head of "Nuori Karjala") for sponsoring us, Sergey Ilchenko for the sound recording and processing, Alexey Maksimov for developing the design and others taking part in the project.
